McKINNEY, TX – The McKinney ISD will begin the upcoming school year virtually.

“McKinney ISD has made the decision to start the 2020-21 school year in a completely virtual (online) environment for all students for the first three weeks of school, beginning August 13,” wrote Dr. Rick McDaniel, the superintendent of the MISD, in a letter released July 17.

Several surrounding school districts are also beginning the school year online. The full letter from Dr. McDaniel is posted below: 


Dear McKinney ISD Parents/Guardians, 

With the rapidly changing situation concerning COVID-19 in Collin and surrounding counties, McKinney ISD has made the decision to start the 2020-21 school year in a completely virtual (online) environment for all students for the first three weeks of school, beginning August 13.

We have been monitoring the McKinney ISD Commitment Response Form results as they have come in, and those results indicate that the majority of parents/guardians are choosing in-person instruction.

While we completely respect and appreciate the desire for in-person instruction, we have decided to begin school with virtual instruction until the public health situation improves. Our goal is to begin offering on-campus instruction on September 3. Please know that this decision was not made lightly and that it was made out of concern for the safety and health of all students and staff.

For information regarding our virtual protocols, see the McKinney ISD Instructional Plan released last week on the District website, as all students will be expected to follow the appropriate start times and grade-appropriate procedures for virtual instruction. In the coming weeks, the District will post and email detailed information regarding log on procedures for all learners.

To provide as much consistency as possible for students during this transitional period, students who had opted for on-campus instruction will be served in a virtual learning environment with the same teacher and classmates who would be in their on-campus classroom. Regarding extra-curricular activities on campus, McKinney ISD is waiting for further guidance from the University Interscholastic League (UIL). 

If you have not done so yet, we ask that you submit the Commitment Response Form (available on the District homepage) to indicate if your child/ren will attend school in person or virtually when on-campus instruction becomes available on September 3. This information is vital to our planning and preparation at both the district and campus level. 

As a reminder, the opportunity to change that decision will be available prior to the beginning of the school year. We will be posting information on our McKinney ISD homepage regarding a Change of Decision Form that will allow students and parents to submit a change to what was previously communicated to the District via the Commitment Response Form

Parents will be able to submit changes beginning July 20, and the deadline to request a change will be July 30, at 11:59 p.m. After this period, the next opportunity to change your child’s instructional environment will be at the end of the first nine weeks of school.
